How is psychotherapy different from counselling?
Counselling and psychotherapy offer valuable support, but the right choice depends on your needs.
Counselling is typically short-term and focused on specific challenges like stress, relationship issues, or grief, helping you develop coping strategies and practical solutions. Single sessions may be appropriate
Psychotherapy is often more in-depth, exploring past experiences, emotional patterns, and underlying mental health concerns such as trauma, anxiety, or depression. If you're looking for immediate guidance and problem-solving, counselling may be the right fit. If you want to work through deeper emotional struggles and long-term patterns, psychotherapy might be the best approach.
Psychosocial interventions are regulated in most provinces. All counselling therapists and psychotherapists at Uplift are registered members of professional colleges. Therapists must practice within the limits of their professional scope.
Uplift uses an Integrative Therapy Model which draws from;
CTB (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy): practical tools for mood and thought reframing through structured exercises.
Solutions Focused/Brief Solutions Focused: Goal oriented.
Trauma Informed: Examines the impact of and is sensitive to experiences of trauma.
Psychodynamic: explores unconscious patterns and past experiences to understand present behaviour.
Person-Centered: Non-directive support fostering self-growth through empathy, authenticity and acceptance.
